The Giver follows Jonas, a young man in a future community who is selected to become the community's Receiver of Memory, whose job it is to remember all of human history in order to help the community's elders to make the best possible decisions. Jeff Bridges plays the previous Receiver of Memory, who gives Jonas all those memories. The book, published in 1993, quickly became a staple in middle school and high school reading lists for the way it examines what it means to be human.
