Mel Gibson's wife Robyn Moore has filed for divorce from the actor after 28 years of marriage. The divorce papers, which were signed April 9, cite "irreconcilable differences."
To add to the drama, TMZ
reports that the couple never signed a prenup agreement, since Gibson was just a struggling actor when the couple married. Since then, he's acquired no small fortune: In 2006, his wealth was estimated at about $900 million. That means under California law, they should split it 50/50. Mel and Robyn in the early days.
Robyn's asking for spousal support and attorney fees, in addition to joint physical and legal custody of Tom, their 10-year-old son. The couple has seven kids together total, but Tom is the only minor.
In the papers, Robyn lists the date of separation as "to be determined." TMZ claims this is significant, because after the couple separates, earnings are no longer community property. Robyn and Mel issued a statement: Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so.
TMZ also reports that Robyn has chosen attorney Laura Wasser to represent her. Sound familiar? Wasser's also repped such A-listers as Angelina Jolie
, Britney Spears
and Stevie Wonder
in their divorces.
Rumors that the split might involve another woman have been running wild, but Mel denies any cheating. Still, Us Weekly
reports: "Gibson was recently photographed with a woman who did not appear to be his wife in Costa Rica on March 4." See more pictures of Mel (click any photo):
