Trailer of the Week
Frankenweenie

Young Victor brings his dead doggy Sparky back to life a la Dr. Frankenstein in Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, due out in time for Halloween 2012. The feature is based on Burton's 1984 short film of the same name. Featuring the voices of Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, and Martin Landau, Frankenweenie looks like a charming and funny little movie. Burton is taking a risk releasing the film in black and white, but the story and the classic theme of a boy and his dog should carry it through.

Hudgens, Gomez on the Spring Breakers set

A blonde Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez were seen leaving their trailers on the set of Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers, easily one of the weirdest projects in recent Hollywood history due to the director's resume. Photographers have been all over the production, looking for any glimpse of the former Disney starlets or co-star Ashley Benson.

Saldana teams with Bale in revenge flick

(Getty Images)

  • Last week, we discovered the Hollywood Reporter's news that Christian Bale had landed the lead in Scott Cooper's Out of the Furnace about an ex-con who gets out of jail only to find his brother has been murdered. This week, new reports have Zoe Saldana in early talks to join Bale in the production. Variety was first to report Saldana's inclusion as well as Casey Affleck and Robert Duvall's. Saldana would play Bale's ex-wife and Affleck his little brother.
  • Luther collaborators Sam Miller and Idris Elba will reteam for a feature-length project titled No Good Deed. Slashfilm reports this week Elba has joined the film about a mother who allows a man, who claims to have car trouble, into her home. The stranger (likely Elba's role) then takes the mother and her kids hostage and terrorizes them. Taraji P. Henson will play the mother role. Anyone who first saw Elba on The Wire as gangster Stringer Bell knows the actor has a legit evil steak. He may be at his best when playing a villain.

Oscar Watch 2013
The Master may have a release date

Starting this week, The Screening Room will follow the best prospective films of the year and keep a running tab of who is leading the race for Best Picture nominations, as well as other categories. We will also keep you updated on any news relevant to these films.
- HUGE news for all of us who've followed with baited breath any updates out of the production of Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master. Producer Megan Ellison tweeted to Anderson's fan site, Cigarettes and Red Vines, today.

Obviously this is no sure thing, but it's the greatest indication yet The Master will be released late this year for an awards push. There had been talk the film wouldn't be released until sometime in 2013. If Anderson's movie, starring Philip Seymour-Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, and Amy Adams, is released in October it makes the film a definite Oscar favorite considering Anderson's history of amazing movies (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood).

2013 Best Picture Nominees

  • Obviously, we are incredibly early here making any predictions for prospective awards since the Oscars just ended. However, some hypotheses can be made based on director, story, and actors involved. A movie like Lincoln, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is a quintessential presumptive Oscar contender. Simply based on the equation, Spielberg + Day-Lewis + iconic real-life protagonist (Abraham Lincoln), the film should be in the running from its release date.

  1. Lincoln
  2. The Master
  3. The Dark Knight Rises
  4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
  5. Moonrise Kingdom
  6. Les Miserables
  7. Gravity
  8. Django Unchained
  9. Great Expectations
  10. Anna Karenina
