Writer/director Leslye Headland makes her directorial debut with an impressively funny cast of ladies in the upcoming Bachelorette (Sept. 6). We caught the film's trailer this week, and it obviously has Bridesmaids to thank for its rapid release. The film stars a slew of funny women who have comedic nuptials experience: Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids), Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), and Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia). Okay so Melancholia is the opposite of funny, but Dunst was a drunken bride in it... still counts. Adam Scott and James Marsden will handle the token male characters here, but the star to watch is Wilson, the scene-stealing Aussie with the infected tattoo from Bridesmaids.

With Lincoln on the horizon in December, Steven Spielberg is prepping his next project and it's a big one. Robopocalypse, written by Kario Salem and Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) and based on the novel by Daniel H. Wilson, is the story of society's battle against a violent robot uprising. Deadline reports Spielberg has his eye on Chris Hemsworth as his leading man but there are no offers on the table yet. Spielberg has directed some of the best sci-fi films in movie history (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Minority Report, A.I.) but he has swung and missed (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds).

  • Denzel Washington has landed the title role in The Equalizer, which will start filming next year according to Deadline. "He’ll play a solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized." Sounds about right for Denzel.

  • Collider also spoke with Ben Stiller about The Watch, opening this Friday, but also had time to ask about Zoolander 2. Stiller seems optimistically pessimistic:

The Master cometh

(Studio Canal | The Weinstein Co.)
  • Rian Johnson's Looper will open the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 7th ahead of its wide release on the 28th. Other films debuting at the festival: Argo, Jayne Mansfield's Car, Cloud Atlas, To the Wonder, and Much Ado About Nothing. TIFF annually gives exposure to lesser-known movies, but Looper will be one of its most high-profile openers ever. Given the pedigree of Johnson and the one-of-a-kind screenplay, here's hoping it can be the sci-fi crossover hit the Academy can't ignore.

  • Vulture got its talons on a new six minute clip from Joe Wright's upcoming Oscar-bait, Anna Karenina.

  • Check out the first full-length trailer and teaser poster (above, full-size here) for Paul Thomas Anderson's The Master. THIS WILL BE ONE OF THE BEST FILMS OF THE YEAR, as if you didn't know.
