Hollywood's elite loves expensive sushi, but only if it's environmentally conscious. Some very high-profile names -- including Charlize Theron
, Sienna Miller
, his wife Trudie Styler
, Elle Macpherson
, Alicia Silverstone
, Woody Harrelson
and Ted Danson
-- are in the midst of a boycott against London's Nobu restaurant, partially owned by Robert DeNiro
Featured on Nobu's lengthy sushi menu is the rare bluefin tuna, which is so rare that it's actually becoming extinct. The A-listers have signed a petition asking the restaurant to remove the endangered fish from the menu so they can munch guilt-free. The statement reads: As customers and fans of Nobu we strongly feel that bluefin tuna must be completely removed from your menu due to its perilous position as an extremely endangered animal.
Nobu is a restaurant we all love, a world leader in sushi with a fantastic reputation and enormous influence. If Nobu took a definitive stand on this issue it could make a critical difference.
The possibility that the magnificent bluefin tuna, one of the fastest creatures on the planet, could be extinct in as little as four years is a tragedy. Continuing to serve bluefin leaves Nobu vulnerable to public criticism and lagging behind Moshi Moshi, Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, Itsu and numerous others. Woody Harrelson is horrified by the plight of the bluefin tuna.
And yes, Nobu is listening. They added a note to the bottom of the menu last month indicating that the fish is endangered, and a spokesperson has said they're taking the issue "very seriously."
Nobu has until the end of the day to respond before the stars will presumably abandon the spot altogether. See more pictures (click any photo):
