Sacha Baron Cohen as The Dictator (Paramount) Normally, when you're one of the major actors in one of the films nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, you get to go to the awards show. Such is not the case for comedian
Sacha Baron Cohen, who just had his invite revoked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Cohen, who is one of the stars in
Martin Scorsese's Oscar nominated
Hugo, is banned from attending Sunday's Oscar ceremony. According to
Deadline.com, a proposal from the
Borat star and his people reached the Academy suggesting that the actor walk the red carpet in full costume as his character in the upcoming film
The Dictator.
The payoff, theoretically would be twofold: Cohen's film would drum up plenty of publicity thanks to the stunt and the Oscars would have a buzz-worthy red carpet moment that would make the rounds the following morning.
Unfortunately, there's only room for one dictator on Oscar night, and it's the Academy. In the end, Sacha Baron Cohen will have the last laugh. His ban from the awards show will create enough publicity for his new movie while the Academy looks like a bunch of uptight and self-righteous jerks.
