Who knew Idris Elba was an Internet troll?
The rumor that Elba might be the next James Bond appears to have reached The Dark Tower actor, and over the weekend, he responded in the best way he knew how — punking people on Twitter. On Sunday morning, the star appeased — or tortured — his followers by posting a selfie accompanied with a cryptic caption.
"My name’s Elba," he wrote, "Idris Elba," which is an obvious nod to the iconic 007 "The name's Bond, James Bond" line.
Naturally, fans were #shook to the core. There's a chance the tweet is hinting we could all be seeing him in a tux and an Aston Martin on the big screen. Later, however, he posted a follow-up tweet that crushed everyone's hopes.
"Don’t believe the HYPE..." he wrote.
It's unclear whether the tweet alludes to the Bond rumors or if it's just a lyric of one of Public Enemy's hits (Elba posted a picture of the hip-hop group prior to tweeting the line), but it was enough to cause an even bigger stir and leave fans way more confused.
Rumors about Elba being the new Bond have circulated for years now, but they reached a fever pitch earlier this week. According to U.K.-based tabloid The Daily Star, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli told director Antoine Fuqua it was time for a Black actor to take on the role. According to the report, Fuqua specifically had Elba in mind to replace Daniel Craig, who will be stepping down from the role.
"He never had a conversation with Barbara about the franchise or about any casting," the rep told The Hollywood Reporter. "It’s all made-up stuff. Not sure how it got started."
Craig's last performance as Bond won't hit theaters until late next year, so it will be quite a while until we get confirmation on who will be the next to join Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
If Elba isn't the new 007, we have a few other actors in mind...
1. Tom Hiddleston
As evidenced in BBC's The Night Manager, Hiddleston plays a great spy. The series garnered him a Golden Globe award for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film in 2017. Not to mention, he's a Brit and looks dashing in a tux. The man ticks all the boxes.
2. Henry Cavill
Superman as 007? Why the hell not? Cavill auditioned for the role back in 2005 (he was only 22 then, FYI) and reached the final two before Craig clinched the gig. Now that he's gained more experience as an actor, we think he deserves a license to kill.
3. Oscar Isaac
What's that? You want a James Bond with angst, edge, and individuality? No actor fits the bill like Isaac. The world has already fallen in love with him thanks to Star Wars, and his history of roles proves his versatility as an actor.
4. Tom Hardy
Hardy has played a wide range of roles in his career, and he would certainly pull off the tux. His role in Christopher Nolan’s Inception — a James Bond-esque character, BTW — was nothing short of spectacular, making him a perfect fit for 007.
5. Michael Fassbender
His role as X-Men's Magneto was a brilliant demonstration of Fassbender's action chops, which makes him a worthy successor to Craig. He's even got suggestions for the next installment of James Bond films.
"I think they should reboot the James Bond series and go back to his origins as a soldier," he said in a 2016 interview. "I’ve got a great idea for it actually, so Barbara Broccoli, talk to me."
You know who once played a soldier? Fassbender, of course.
