Anastasia Is the Biggest Winner of That Fox-Disney Merger, TBH

Mama's got a new favorite Disney princess now.

Anastasia Is the Biggest Winner of That Fox-Disney Merger, TBH
20th Century Fox

By now, you've most likely read that Disney intends to buy 21st Century Fox for a whopping $52.4 billion. There is no shortage of worrisome implications if the deal goes through: less risky movies, increased media consolidation, billions of dollars in the hands of Rupert Murdoch... But in the midst of the deal's most consequential results, let us not lose sight of the single most important development: Anastasia will finally become a Disney Princess.

Your favorite non-Disney, Disney movie will now be — get this — a Disney movie. Anastasia, the most beloved animated historical musical of our era, was produced by Fox Animation Studios, a now defunct subsidiary of 20th Century Fox, which is owned by 21st Century Fox, which could soon be owned by Walt Disney Co. It's a lot to take in, I know.

So now, not only will Anastasia Romanov be known as the once IRL Grand Duchess of Russia, but as the inspiration behind a Disney princess. Furthermore, Dimirti, Anastasia's conman and love interest, will now tie Flynn Rider as hottest animated character of all time (I don't make the rules). And, now we can finally add the entire Anastasia soundtrack to our Disney music playlist. That's right, "Once Upon a December," will now rightfully sit next to "I'll Make a Man Out of You." This feels right, does it not?

It is likely, however, the justice department will attempt to halt the merger similarly to the AT&T–Time Warner deal, which might be for the best (RE: less risky movies, increased media consolidation, billions of dollars in the hands of Rupert Murdoch).

But for now, I will bask in the prospect of Anastasia taking her legally ordained place next to Cinderella and Ariel.
