In news that seems too bizarre (and wonderful) to be true, James Marsden will star in a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. The classic Sega game is being adapted for the big screen for the first time, and the hunky Westworld actor may be playing Sonic. '90s kids, take all the time you need to process this one.
Per Variety, Paramount landed the rights to the adaptation in 2017. It's being described as a "live-action/animation hybrid," and is slated to hit theaters November 15, 2019. It's unclear if Marsden will play the titular character or another starring role, but the studio hasn't explicitly announced Marsden as Sonic, which may be a good sign for hopefuls. It's Schrödinger's casting, if you will.
I have to admit, I have questions. Why make a Sonic the Hedgehog movie now? Why make it live-action and animation, when the only time that has ever worked was in 1988's Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Furthermore, who is this film's target audience? It's a stretch to believe the game has a modern following other than nostalgic adults. After all, Marsden is in his forties, and currently stars in a sci-fi show on HBO. He's not going to be drawing the kids out, which is why it makes sense that Paramount has tapped Deadpool director Tim Miller for the project.
While I'm a little skeptical, I have to admit this movie could be extremely fun. Obviously you don't pick up a big screen adaptation of an irrelevant video game (don't @ me) unless you a) love it and b) have some big ideas for it. Plus, it's Paramount, not Disney, and Deadpool isn't your average action flick. Maybe the game's adult fans are finally getting the R-rated movie adaptation they've longed for since their youth? Don't laugh! It's a thing.
My many questions aside, this project seems silly and lighthearted. In an era when the average headline is enough to make a person want to put their head through a wall, we shouldn't take the goofy stuff for granted... even if it does seem like a total enigma.
Hey, will Enigma be in the movie? Have they cast her yet? I'm totally available.
