Stephen Colbert (Getty Images) Yesterday Comedy Central abruptly and unexpectedly suspended production of
Stephen Colbert's late night satire show
The Colbert Report for the rest of the week due to unforeseen circumstances.
Colbert's network announced that they would be airing repeat episodes on Feb. 15 and 16. Colbert himself has yet to comment on the situation, but it appears that he was unaware the suspension was coming down, as seen in his last tweet which teased Wednesday's show: "Watch Stephen help shape the message of Colbert Super PAC with the help of political strategist Frank Luntz."
Today the
Huffington Post reported that Colbert's sudden shutdown came after the host's mother became seriously ill. Comedy Central has remained tight-lipped over the situation, citing the fact that the Colberts are a "very private family."
Stephen Colbert is the youngest of 11 children, born to his mother Lorna and father James Colbert. Colbert's father and two of his brothers died tragically in a plane crash when he was just 10-years-old.
The Colbert Report has never suspended production before. The program's sister show,
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, canceled production twice in its history, once after the death of a staff member and once when Stewart became a father.
