When in doubt, just reduce, reuse, recycle.
It’s been a little over 15 years since Peter Jackson’s epic The Lord of the Rings trilogy concluded, so of course Hollywood is ready to remake it! In fact, Amazon has officially green-lit the series with a multi-season commitment to produce J.R.R. Tolkien’s revered fantasy series for the small screen. What’s more? This deal also includes the potential for an additional spin-off series!
It all sounds a little too good to be true, right? As it turns out, there is a major catch.
Well, the new TV series will explore storylines preceding the events in the first Lord of the Rings novel, The Fellowship of the Ring. Despite being set in Middle Earth, Amazon’s series will not explore the war to destroy the one ring to rule them all.
Avoiding a remake of Jackson’s trilogy is a smart move, given their towering cinematic imprint. It would be difficult to imagine how Frodo and the Fellowship could possibly get a better page-to-screen adaptation. Plus, The Hobbit films are an entirely different beast to tackle which is why choosing a different narrative to share seems like the right choice here.
Perhaps we’ll get a live-action adaptation of The Silmarillion? Now that would truly be legendary. Whatever the result may be, fortunately there is an abundance of material to chose from the appendices of Tolkien’s books.
The good news is that the project is moving forward in cooperation with Tolkien's estate which should hopefully be an indicator of its success and credibility.
“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” explained Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
