Party of one!
The forthcoming season of Grey's Anatomy is emphatically titled "Season of Love" yet the show's leading lady will not be hooking up with any hotties. Yes, that's right, folks! Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital's most eligible bachelorette has no interest in dipping her feet into the dating pool. So what gives?
Well, according to ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey, Ellen Pompeo's onscreen alter ego will remain single for the foreseeable future despite the medical drama going all in on romance this fall.
"Meredith [is going to] have a new trajectory that is more focused on who she is as a single mother and surgeon," Dungey revealed at the Television Critics Association press tour. The emotional journey will also investigate a medical condition that is very close to Meredith's own family history. "Ellen has spoken very loudly about how she doesn't want all of Meredith's adventures to be romantic ones."
Of course, Dungey is referring to Pompeo's bombshell interview with the Hollywood Reporter. Last January, the Grey's Anatomy star revealed her dismay at how ABC pushed for Meredith to be paired up with a new man (Martin Henderson's character, Nathan) after the shocking death of McDreamy.
"The ink wasn't even dry on [Patrick Dempsey's] exit papers before they rushed in a new guy," Pompeo lamented to THR. "I was on vacation in Sicily, decompressing… and they're calling me, going, 'What do you think of this guy? What do you think of this guy?' And they're sending pictures. I was like, 'Are you people f–king nuts? Why do you feel that you have to replace this person?' I couldn't believe how fast the studio and the network felt like they had to get a penis in there."
Although Dungey did not entirely rule out a potential new relationship for Meredith, she did point out that it's no longer a central focus for the character's narrative. "I'm not saying no," Dungey added. "I think we'll get there [eventually]. I'm just saying that she's on a trajectory that is very much about her evolution as a doctor and a parent. There's been a lot of dating, and I think [Ellen's] excited — we're all excited — to explore some different aspects of the character."
When the time is right, hopefully Meredith will get another chance with Season 14 guest star Scott Speedman, who played the dashing Dr. Nick Marsh.
