Grey's Anatomy fans, gird your loins, because the acclaimed medical drama might be nearing its end. Our favorite gang may soon retire their scrubs.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ellen Pompeo — who plays Meredith Grey on the hit ABC show — said she thinks they've exhausted the stories they can tell, which could be a hint Grey's will bid farewell to the airwaves in the near future. You know what they say: All good things must come to an end.
“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell," she said. "It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change."
Now approaching its 15th season, Grey's Anatomy is about to tie with E.R. as one of the longest running hospital shows on television. Despite playing the same character for 14 years, Pompeo said the show still had a place in her heart.
"I still am fighting every day for the quality of the show to be good and for the actors to be happy," she shared.
Back in January, the actress closed a two-year extension with the show and signed on to be a producer. She also revealed she was "bored" with acting, so the "change" she yearned for may have referred to her work behind the camera.
"I’d love to direct a pilot. I really like producing, that’s really challenging for me," she told Deadline. "I think I’ve had an amazing training. I’ve had a Master Class in producing these last 14 years. I know every aspect of making a television show. Producing and directing is where I’m challenged and where I’m learning. It’s more interesting to me because it’s a skill I haven’t mastered yet."
Assuming that Grey's Anatomy does end after Season 16, series creator Shonda Rhimes would surely pen the final episode.
"I have written the end of the show at least six times," Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly. "But we just don’t end. Every time I thought, this is how the show should end, we’ve gone past those moments, so I’ve stopped trying. I have no idea now."
Grey's Anatomy returns on Thursday, September 27 on ABC.
