Barely a year after Megyn Kelly Today premiered on NBC, the doors are closing on the daytime talk show. Earlier this week, Kelly hosted a discussion about the use of blackface for Halloween costumes, and her comments were met with outstanding criticism. On Friday, an NBC rep announced the show's cancellation: "Megyn Kelly Today is not returning. Next week, the 9 am hour will be hosted by other Today co-anchors."

Kelly is now reportedly negotiating her exit from NBC. In January of 2017, the network hired the journalist and pulled her away from Fox News with a three-year, $69 million contract.

In the video below, Kelly comments on blackface and how it was used for Halloween costumes when she was a child.

"Back when I was a kid, it was okay as long as you dressed up as a character," she stated, adding that "political correctness" has "run amuck" in the world and that no one should have the authority to stop people from dressing as certain things and people.

Her comments suggested she condones the racist act.

Other celebrities have commented on the controversy as well, including former The Talk co-host, Aisha Tyler.

Kelly later apologized for the blunder, but the damage was done. However, let's not put all of the blame on this one incident. Megyn Kelly Today has caused a lot of backlash toward NBC with little reward. The show's ratings were reportedly low compared to her competitors'.

Kelly has also gotten into hot water for her comments on the Me Too movement. During her first week on the series alone, she called homosexuality "the gay thing" and  defended Ivanka Trump.

Who will lead Today into the future? If The Conners can survive without Roseanne Barr, maybe this shake-up will be a ratings revival for NBC.

The blackface controversy was the final straw of many.

What are your thoughts on the cancellation?
