'Community' and 'Whitney' Premieres Delayed Indefinitely

Community (and Whitney) fans are going to have to wait a bit longer for the return of their favorite shows.

NBC announced late Monday that both comedies will not debut on Friday, Oct. 19, as was previously scheduled (via Vulture). There's no word on when either show will air, although it's a safe bet that the Peacock network might be waiting to see how some of its other shows do in the next few weeks. Animal Practice and Up All Night have both struggled in the ratings and could be ripe for replacement by either Community or Whitney.

In a statement, NBC said that the decision to delay the premieres of the two shows had more to do with marketing resources than with the quality of either series. “Given the success we’ve had for the past four weeks – including winning the first week of the season in A18-49 – we’ve decided to continue to concentrate our promotional strength on our new NBC shows that are scheduled Monday through Wednesday and have therefore decided to hold Community and Whitney from their previously announced premieres of October 19th," the network said.

"Without having to launch these comedies on Friday at this time, we can keep our promotion focused on earlier in the week — plus we will have both comedies in our back pocket if we need to make any schedule changes on those nights.  When we have a better idea of viewing patterns in the next few weeks,  we will announce new season premieres of Whitney and Community."

Long story short, NBC shuffled Community and Whitney to Friday nights, then forgot all about them until the last minute. The two shows have always seemed like a wildly mismatched timeslot pairing (and don't even get us started on how they were supposed to provide a lead-in to Grimm), so it does make sense to see where the chips fall with a few other new shows before deciding where Community and Whitney could end up. So this decision by NBC could end up proving fortuitous for both shows.

But in the meantime, we're pretty bummed that we won't be watching a new episode of Community in just under two weeks...
