Finally! During the last season of This Is Us, the big mystery on everyone's minds was Jack's death. Even following the revelation (no spoilers here), there was still so much to discover about his past. Now, it's all going to be unveiled because Michael Angarano has been cast as Jack's brother, Nicky. There were several references to Jack's late brother throughout the first two seasons of the show. Learning more about his past and his time in the war is sure to reveal a side of him we haven't seen. We'll finally get a glimpse of Jack's relationship with his sibling (which is reportedly the complete opposite of Randall and Kevin's strained relationship) and how he turned into such a great guy.
We've seen a bit of Nicky on the show already, but only in childhood photos and flashbacks. It's been teased that the biggest moments in Jack and Nicky's relationship occurred during the Vietnam War, which will be explored in flashbacks and the present. Kevin and Zoe took a trip to Vietnam in the Season 2 finale.
During the TCA summer press tour, showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker teased the upcoming season of the show.
According to Aptaker, "We are going to be spending a lot of time in Vietnam" exploring Jack’s war-torn origin story.
"There’s something very freeing about being past the mystery of Jack’s death and moving into this new chapter and being able to tell a completely different kind of story," Berger added. "To be all of a sudden [writing] about the Vietnam War is very special and different."
The mysteries of This Is Us keep fans watching, but the show is all about the relationships between its characters — the good, the bad, and the ugly. Revealing Jack and Nicky's heartwarming (yet devastating) relationship will only add to our emotional trauma. Let's be honest, most of us are not ready to mourn the death of another character. Remember: We already know Nicky passed away, but we don't know how or why.
Nicky's entrance into the series also means a great opportunity to explore Jack's teenage years. From growing up in an abusive home with a terrible father to being at the center of the Vietnam War, Jack certainly had a hard life. Despite this, he's an amazing man, so understanding his history could be even more important than seeing how he died.
Season 3 should also shed light on Kevin and Randall's relationship. Seeing the two sets of brothers side-by-side would be brutal considering the differences in both relationships. I'd love to see Kevin and Randall learn from their father and uncle.
The series has promised to explore Toby and Beth's pasts, so there's going to be a lot of focus outside our usual Pearson family clan. I'd love to see more moments for Kate, Randall, and Jack. Maybe we'll even get to see how Rebecca handled past traumas.
Are you ready for the Pearson family to return?
This Is Us Season 3 premieres Tuesday, September 25 on NBC.
