Hidden Figures highlighted real-life women who forever altered U.S. history behind the scenes, and during Sunday's MTV Movie & TV Awards, the film was recognized once more for its influence.
Accepting the award for Best Fight Against the System, HF star Taraji P. Henson tackled the lack of females in STEM head-on.
"For me, it was very important, because I grew up understanding...no one ever told me that girls couldn't do math and science, but there was an understanding, right?" she said on stage.
"There was an understanding that it was for boys," she continued. "So I remember getting this script and being very upset because I felt like a dream was stolen from me. It became my mission...to dispel that myth so that another young girl would not grow up thinking that her mind was incapable of grasping math and science. If it were not for these women, we wouldn’t be in space."
The award was presented to Henson by Rep. Maxine Waters, a democratic U.S. Representative from St. Louis, Missouri.
Other nominees in the category included Get Out, Loving, Luke Cage, and Mr. Robot.
The 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards airs on MTV 8 p.m. PST.
