When JJ Abrams handed the Star Trek franchise over to Justin Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious movies, the hope was for the younger director to bring a fresh new take to the franchise. He's definitely done that, but fans might not be totally down for the ride he's taking them on in the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond.

Reaction to the trailer has been mixed (to be polite) with old school Star Trek fans complaining that it doesn't look or feel anything like the more cerebral sci-fi world they fell in love with. Instead, we see our heroes battling elf-like creatures, jumping a motorcycle, and running from explosions while the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" blasts behind them. ("Sabotage," by the way, is a callback to the 2009 Star Trek reboot, which opened with Kirk stealing a car while listening to the song.)

On the other hand, well it looks kind of awesome. See what you think.
