The 'Jane The Virgin' Season 5 Trailer Just Clued Us In On THAT Shocking Season 4 Cliffhanger

Everyone is as shocked as we are that you-know-who is back.

'Jane The Virgin' Season 5 Teaser Confirms That [SPOILER] Is Really Back
The CW

Warning: spoilers ahead!

It's been almost a year since Jane The Virgin's Season 4 finale, but we're still picking our jaws up from the floor thanks to one — to put it mildly — shocking reveal.

After Jane's husband, Michael, abruptly dies in Season 3 (and Jane spends most of Season 3 and 4 trying to recover), the final seconds of Season 4 find Jane staring him straight in the face. As soon as she opens the door to Rafael's apartment, she sees Michael in the flesh — alive, alert, and weirdly apathetic.

It was a moment we never saw coming. Sure, Jane The Virgin is rooted in telenovela tropes ("straight out of a telenovela, right?!" as the perpetually cheery narrator would say) but we never dreamed Michael might still be alive. Just like Jane, we already mourned his death, and now that he's back, we're back at square one.

The newly released Season 5 Jane The Virgin teaser proves we're not the only ones dumbfounded by the return.

"Michael's alive?!" a shocked Xiomara exclaims while Rogelio (Jane's dad and Michael's self-appointed BFF) faints behind her. Jane states "my husband just came back from the dead" and the teaser flashes back to a carnival where Jane and Michael are riding a ferris wheel — the moment they first made their relationship official. It's revealed Michael has some sort of amnesia, and later on, Petra tells Michael she's glad to see him alive (and Michael grins back at her. Huh?!). Rogelio desperately tries to jog Michael's memory by repeating his name over and over, and Michael seems genuinely perplexed. To echo the narrator, the whole thing is straight out of a telenovela.

Jane The Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman previously revealed killing and reviving Michael has been in the works for some time. Apparently, it's been on the back burner since the beginning of the series, but Season 3 is when they decided to run with it.

"This was something that I left open as a possibility, but I had to really think through where we were going, how to shape the show toward the ending and what we wanted to do," she told the Hollywood Reporter. "I sat down with Brett about a year ago and told him just to wait, that it was going to happen. But this was something that, once it coalesced in my mind, really shifted things a little bit and felt like the right move and the right way to set things up and to return to themes and to give a big telenovela twist as we head into the fifth season."

Since the finale, fans have come up with a slate of theories on Michael's sudden return. Some think he's undercover and only faked his death to protect Jane and Mateo, and some are convinced it's actually Sin Rostro pretending to be Michael with her crazy masks. Some even believe Michael has a secret evil twin, just like Petra!

We won't know for sure until the season premiere on March 27, but Urman gave us one more tidbit to look forward to:

"There will be — How can I answer that? There will be a wedding," she said.

*explodes in excitement*
